Safā'
T H E I N S P I R A T I O N
She climbs while the rain is still deciding whether to fall. The path is soft underfoot, dark earth and green, and the trees close overhead until the sky narrows to bright coins scattered through the canopy. Lemon-sharp light. The first drops arrive high above her, and she hears them before she feels them — a whisper travelling leaf to leaf, the whole forest waking to speak at once.
Then it comes down in earnest, and the air turns.
Everything gives its scent to the rain. Crushed green underfoot, wet bark, the cold bright lift of citrus somewhere in the leaves. She draws a branch of rosemary through her fingers and it releases its whole heart at once — herbal, clean, thyme close beside it, the mountainside breathing out all it has held through the summer. At the tip of every leaf a droplet gathers, trembles, catches the light, and falls.
She tips her face up and lets the rain find it. Cold water on warm skin. Each drop a single clear thought, arriving one at a time, rinsing away the week, the month, the long grey hum of a life lived indoors. She is not sheltering. She climbed all this way for precisely this — to stand inside the weather and be washed down to something simple.
When the rain moves on, the forest steams in the returning light. The green settles. And beneath it all, close to her skin now, a warmth rises to meet the cool — soft musk, sandalwood, the quiet resinous heart of the trees themselves. She breathes in, and the breath goes all the way down. Safā' is the mountain after rain: everything washed clean, everything clear, everything beginning again.
