WHITE BONFIRE

Dukhān Abyaḍ

She was the daughter of a farmer, and her father never once let her forget that she would not be one. He said it kindly, over supper, with the sand still in the creases of his hands: study, and go, and do not come back to this. Her mother said the same without words, in the way she set a book down beside the plate.

So she listened. School, then university, then the long climb — and now she runs Abu Dhabi's largest vertical farming company. A farmer still, in the end.

Her parents have never asked her for anything, except this: that she not forget where she came from. Her roots.

The memory she returns to is the burning. The old crop cleared by fire so the field could begin again. It always started at dusk. Her father would set the first flame, and the smoke would rise white — not grey, white — in great soft columns that leaned against the sky. White bonfires, she called them when she was small, and no one ever corrected her.

She swears she can still smell them. Smoke first, and clove folded inside it, the burnt spice of grain gone to ash. Then wood, deepening, faintly floral. Wet moss from the rains, where the fire had not yet reached. And beneath all of it a sweetness she has never been able to explain to anyone — the smell of the ground itself giving something up.

She stands now behind glass, forty floors above a city that has never burned anything. She closes her eyes. She is eight years old, and her parents are alive, and the whole sky is white with it.
